ingredients

  • 1 cup (120 degrees) warm water
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2/3 cup honey
  • 1--2 T molasses
  • 1 1/4 cups milk, heated to 120 degrees
  • 1 egg warmed, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • Directions

Mix water, sugar, and yeast; let stand until foamy in order to proof yeast. Add the rest of the ingredients to the yeast mixture. Stir in 3 cups whole wheat flour to make a thick paste. Place in 120 degree oven for about 1-2 hours until light and high. Then add flour as needed to make stiff dough. Knead for 10-15 minutes until smooth and elastic. Let rise until double (about 2-2 1/2 hours). Punch down and knead again.

Roll on greased board. Shape into 18-24 rolls or roll out like cinnamon rolls (the cinnamon sugar is optional; see Marc's Yeast/Cinnamon Rolls on this website). Let rise (about 2-2 1/2 hours) and bake in an insulated pan at 325 until golden brown (about 28 minutes).
